I chose to do the landscape from multiple sources as one of my final projects. My family comes from Italian descent, and my parents recently visited Italy, so I thought Italian buildings would be interesting. Their bright colors and clean lines also intrigue me. The four images above are the four sources my landscape comes from. I wanted to add more clouds than were in the original landscape, include a gelato shop, and put in a different style of table. I especially liked the first picture's triadic color scheme and wanted to incorporate that. I had to be creative in this part of the process because even though I took inspiration from four places, I had to put them together and use them in my own way to make it personal. Another decision that made this project personal was choosing to use mainly watercolor pencil, since the look of watercolor is one of my favorites, but I needed to have more control for some parts of this project. This part of the process is when I began improving on a certain skill, which was color mixing/establishing different values and intensities with my choice of media. I tend to make things very light and dull, but after doing the building on the right (above), I realized my mistake and went back to make the red much brighter. In the picture on the right, two of the buildings are bright as they should be and I still needed to fix the one on the left. It was very important to adjust the intensities because I specifically wanted to show the bright colors of Italian buildings. I also had to add value to the sides of the buildings because the light source was from the front. The highest image is a one point perspective street I did from earlier in the semester, showing how incorrect my value transitions were then. Below you can see how I improved for this project and adjusted the intensities and values. This is my final work, "The Colorful City", which I think is pretty good. I believe I did a good job of transitioning values and adjusting intensities for the different buildings and objects, which is the skill I aimed to improve. If I could redo it, I would slow down a little so it would be neater. For the whole project, I feel like it deserves about a 93 out of 100. I think all the bright colors really bring it to life, but it looks a bit messy. Something I like is the use of foreground, middle ground, and background. The table and plants in the foreground reduce the amount of negative space and help your eyes transition through the piece. I also like all the plants, which makes the space feel like people really live there. I created a place I would want to visit, and I especially want to go to the gelato shop. Altogether, I think I did a fairly good job of piecing multiple sources together to create a unique, personal product.
